An Overview of the ADA and FMLA

This course gives an overview of The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), including each law's basic requirements; the interaction of ADA, FMLA, and related laws; and ideas for administration to ensure compliance.  Course content incorporates the changes mandated by the ADA Amendments Act, the revised FMLA regulations, and the National Defense Authorization Act Amendments to the FMLA.

Who Should Attend

HR or Benefits Practitioners, Line Managers and Supervisors, Health/Safety Personnel, or Executives/Owners with FMLA/ADA compliance and administration responsibility who want an introduction to these laws, a refresher course, and/or an update on the recent changes.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify what organizations, employees, and situations are covered by the ADA and FMLA
  • Define key ADA or FMLA terms such as disability, serious health condition, reasonable accommodation / undue hardship, intermittent leave, and qualifying exigency
  • Comply with basic ADA/FMLA requirements
  • Develop ADA/FMLA administrative practices, including the management of employee time off in accordance with applicable law
  • Identify HR, Supervisor and Employee roles, rights, and responsibilities
  • Recognize potential liability for non-compliance
  • Access ADA/FMLA information resources
